Bite Nearby: Papa Joe's

There's a reason they call Papa Joe's sub shop "famous"

has been famous in the area for about 40 years, originating with founder Joe Sterk on East 200th street in Euclid, expanding with locations in Eastlake and Wickliffe, and then opening here in Mentor almost five years ago.

"We're the only ones around that make a true Italian sub with all the meats we use," said the Mentor store manager. "It's what we're known for."

It is about the food at Papa Joe's since there is no dining area at any of the locations, including the one at 9179 Mentor Ave. Most of the orders come from call-ins, they said.

The All Italian, as its called, sells at $3.95 for a 7-inch regular and is served hot and cold. The hot-buttered steaks ($6.96 for a 12-inch with grilled onions, mushrooms and cheese) are also big sellers in Mentor.

Other menu items include hot torpedoes with meatballs and sausage ($3.55 to $6.95) and various tossed salads, with things like chicken salad or turkey (about $5.25). French fries and fried mushrooms and potato salad are among the side orders, all priced at under $2.

The onion rings ($1.95) are arguably the best around, according to an onion ring connoisseur I know.

Tuesday night is pasta night with single, double and family size orders of either rigatoni or spaghetti dinners that include meatballs or sausage, garlic bread and side salads. Singles ($5.35), doubles ($9.95) and family sizes ($15.95) are very popular in Mentor.

This winter, the Mentor location cut its delivery service to businesses because of the economy and the weather, the store manager said. But with nicer weather approaching, that service will probably be reinstated.

"With more than 40 different sandwiches on the menu, there is something for every taste," boasts a review online.

Papa Joe's does not have a web site yet, so finding a menu can be tricky. Call them at 440-255-9999 to have one faxed. Otherwise, stop in and grab four to five menus and pass them among friends.
