Around the Patch: Tiny Black Belt Champs & Closing Book Stores

1. She may be adorable but she could break you.

Kathryn Rekar, a 6-year-old Solon resident, won three gold medals and one bronze medal Tuesday at the USA Taekwondo Junior Olympics in San Jose, Calif. She trains at World Champion Martial Arts in Solon, where she has earned her first-degree black belt.

She won gold medals in Forms, Sparring and Weapons and a bronze medal in Board Breaking. She competed in the 6 and 7 black-belt division.

The victory is a big deal because USA Taekwondo is the governing body for the sport and part of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Winning at this level is a first step to the Olympic Games.

2. Speaking of breaking (breaking and entering, that is...)

A Twinsburg man was arrested Saturday and charged with breaking and entering after Solon Police found him and another man with power tools owned by the city of Solon, according to an arrest report.

Terrance Rutkai, 18, and John Hudak, 33, of Streetsboro, were both charged with breaking and entering and receiving stolen property, both felonies. Hudak also had an active arrest warrant from Portage County.

Police said a city storage building on Portz Parkways had been broken into just before the men were arrested.

3. The owner of DuBois Book Store said a combination of a tough textbook market and opportunities to redevelop the Kent store property .

Howard DuBois said in a phone interview this afternoon the onslaught of digital technology, textbook rental programs and other challenges to the traditional book business played a large role in deciding to abruptly close the store Tuesday.

The other factor, DuBois said , was the opportunity to redevelop the large chunk of land the store occupies at the corner of Summit and South Lincoln streets across from .
