Around the Patch: Insanity Pleas, Hot Dogs & No Child Left Inside

1. A Kent man has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity after being charged with stabbing another Kent man to death earlier this summer, .

Leonard Armstrong, 49, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the death of Jeffrey A. Sipes, 57, who was  June 6. Armstrong was indicted on a murder charge in Sipes' death in early July.

Armstrong's defense attorney, Frank Beane, wrote in his written not-guilty plea that his client is a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic and has been under psychiatric care since the age of 20 — for 29 years.

2. North Patch Blogger Shelley Cobb , a bipartisan bill that was recently introduced in Congress.

If passed, this bill would do such things as assist states to create and execute Environmental Literacy Plans to integrate environmental education and field experiences into public academic programs. In addition, colleges, parks, zoos and other organizations would receive grants to develop and implement professional development for educators.

3. Meanwhile, Cuyahoga Falls Patch Blogger Leigh Peterson was infuriated when she heard about a K9 officer dying after he was left in a hot car in Pennsylvania.

"The officer knew enough to keep the car on with the air conditioner running, but at some point during the three-plus hours the dog was trapped, the air stopped working and the dog died of a heat stroke," Peterson wrote.
