Mentor's Unemployment Rate Rose In January

The rate increased 1.5 percent to 6.9 percent in Mentor

After having been stable through November and January, the city of Mentor's unemployment rate increased 1.5 percent to 6.9 percent in January, according to the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services.

Last year, the city's unemployment rate was 6.8 percent in January -- which is, historically, a seasonal highpoint for the unemployment rate.

Both Lake County and the state of Ohio also saw their unemployment rates increase in January 2013.

In Lake County, the unemployment rate jumped from 1.6 percent to 7.9 percent, Meanwhile, statewide he rate increased 1.8 percent to 8.4 percent.

Despite the rate increase, Mentor still has the fourth lowest unemployment rate for any Ohio city with more than 50,000 residents. It trails Lakewood, Cleveland Heights and Columbus.

Mentor's unemployment rate had dropped to 4.6 percent -- its lowest point since Nov. 2007 -- in October. But the rate jumped .8 in November.

The city's unemployment rate peaked in January and February of 2010 at 8.7 percent.
