Attar Massary Muhammed's career in fashion began with a song he recorded called "Yo Habibe."
(Habibe -- pronounced ha-bee-bee -- is Arabic for "my love.")
Muhammed made T-shirts to promote the song and they sold well. Always a fan of fashion, Muhammed decided that the clothing appealed to him more than the music.
"It was always my dream to have a clothing shop when I got out of music," he said, adding that the two art forms have a lot in common.
"They're similar in what it takes to make it -- that is, dedication and a lot of patience," he said.
Muhammed started a Habibe clothing line and opened a shop three years ago in Cleveland. However, he has since decided to relocate to Mentor.
"We had more customers from this part of Ohio than we did from Cleveland," he reasoned.
The new Habibe Clothing Co. is at 9395 Mentor Ave., next to the Sumo Boy restaurant. It will celebrate .
Everything in the store will be 20 percent off all day and DJ Flaco Flash will be spinning music.
Habibe specializes in affordable, contemporary clothing and accessories for women from all cultures and walks of life.
Manager Emily Mohamed said Habibe's clothing is fashionable but still suitable for everyday wear. Moreover, the clothes and accessories are unique, she added.
"What's the number one thing a woman doesn't want?" Mohamed said. "To walk into a place and see another woman wearing the same thing. That's not going to happen over here."
In addition to its own clothing line, Habibe also offers clothes from other local designers and manufacturers.
Starting Saturday, the store will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. everyday. People can also shop on Habibe Clothing Co.'s web site.
