City of Mentor Reports Increase in Unemployment During June

Mentor's unemployment rate increased by a smaller percentage than the county and state

The unemployment rate for Mentor increased .4 percent to 6.7 percent in June 2011, according to the civilian labor force estimates from the Ohio Department Job and Family Services.

However, that bump is proportionately smaller than the .5 percent increase for Lake County and the .7 percent increase for Ohio.

The county and state's unemployment rates are 7.4 percent and 9.2 percent, respectively. The national unemployment rate for June 2011 was also 9.2 percent.

Mentor still has the lowest unemployment rate for any city in Ohio with more than 50,000 residents, according to the city's Economic Development Office.

In fact, of the 20 cities in Ohio with 50,000 or more people, eight of them have an unemployment rate above 10 percent.

Mentor's unemployment rate peaked in January and February of 2010 at 8.7 percent.
