Lake Catholic Begins School Year With Largest Enrollment Since '99

Forty transfers, 15 international students and 217 freshmen are part of Lake Catholic's increased enrollment.

Lake Catholic High School began its 2013-2014 school year this week with an enrollment of 875 students—its largest since 1999.

"The first day when they walk in, it's just an exciting feeling," President Sal Miroglotta said this week during freshman orientation.

The freshman class had the school to itself Wednesday for a four-hour orientation. Regular classes for all other students started Thursday.

"We have an extraordinary number of transfer students, we have 15 international students and we have a big freshman class," Miroglotta said. "We had a great year recruiting, and they all look pretty excited so far."

Freshman enrollment is 217. Forty of those students came from St. Peter Chanel High School in Bedford, which held its final commencement in June. The international students are from countries China, England, Germany and South Korea.

Since last year, Lake Catholic has expanded its elective, music and art programming, and reorganized the math and science curriculum to match Common Core standards. The school also added new turf was also added to the football field.

"We have a good product—99 percent college attendance, lots of scholarship opportunities and a good transportation system," Mirglotta said. "We have some great programs, probably more world language classes than most schools and more fine and performing arts programs than most schools. I think those things are an attraction."
