'The Nature of Watercolors' Art Show Opens Today at Penitentiary Glen

The show kicks off with live art demonstrations from featured artists from noon to 4 p.m. today

Artists have been depicting nature since cave drawings.

However, there's something special about using watercolors to recreate nature in a painting, Mentor artist Alice Ronke said.

"It's a wonderful medium for capturing light," she said. "You can get a luminosity with watercolors that you can't get with any other medium."

Ronke is one of many local painters whose work will be featured at the art show, "The Nature of Watercolors," from today until Oct. 9 at Penitentiary Glen in Kirtland.

The show kicks off with a free reception at the park's nature center from noon to 4 p.m. today where artists will show how they use watercolors to craft nature scenes en plein air.

The art show and reception are both free.

Additionally, if someone would like to buy one of the paintings they see at the show, a portion of that money will go to support nature programs at Penitentiary Glen.
