Drummers Gathering At Lake Catholic Sunday To Break World Record

Big Beat 2012 raises money for Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, which donates music instruments to schools

The Big Beat is coming back to Lake Catholic High School this Sunday.

As many drummers as want to sign up will be taking pledges to raise money for Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, which donates musical instruments to young musicians.

The drummers in Mentor will also try to break a world record by linking up with drummers from several cities around the country. By using the Internet, all of the drummers will play the same beat simultaneously.

  • Listen to last year's Big Beat.

To participate, one needs a bass drum, snare, hi-hat, tom and a carpet or rug square.

This year's Big Beat will also feature drum clinics from local musicians and prizes.

The event is organized locally by John Stebal, a Lake Catholic alum and owner of Stebal Drums in Willowick. Nationally, it is organized by the Five-Star Drum Shops Group, a collection of dozens of independently owned specialty percussion stores that includes Stebal's.

Since 2008, Stebal Drums has raised $30,000 from their Big Beat events. The money bought equipement for Cleveland All City Drumline, Willowick Middle School, Ashtabula Lakeside High School and Painesville Heritage Middle School.

Both registration and pledge forms for the event are available at the Stebal Drums website.
