Veterans Day, The Civil War & Pre-Thanksgiving Parades: Weekly Planner

Check out some of the fun and useful events in the area this weekend

Why Go: There are several events for and about veterans around Mentor this upcoming weekend.

The city of Mentor is holding to celebrate the courage and sacrifice of all veterans at 7 p.m. this Friday at the .

The guest speaker is Bob Zonneville, a Mentor man who served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He has received two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and numerous other awards.

All veterans and the general public are invited to the ceremony.

Also, the senior center will be hosting a . The breakfast is free for veterans and $4 for guests.

Finally, the is hosting a brief celebration for veterans 6 p.m. today.

The event is free. People can enjoy cake and thank a veteran in the library's lobby.

Pricing: All events are free, except for the pancake breakfast which is free for veterans and $4 for guests.

Where/When: Lake County Historical Society, 415 Riverside Drive, Painesville, 10:30 a.m. to noon, Nov. 12

Why Go: Dan Bergen will present a program about Civil War stories and folk songs at the Lake County Historical Society's Heritage Hall.

Pricing: Free for members, $5 for guests.

Where/When: Lake Catholic High School, 9 a.m., Nov. 12

Why Go: 28th Annual Craft Fair with the proceeds going to the music boosters at Lake Catholic -- buy some Christmas gifts, support the arts.

Pricing: Free to attend but you may find something you like while you are there.

4. 

Where/When: in Great Lakes Mall, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nov. 12

Why Go: It's not too soon for some Thanksgiving fun.

Visit Macy's for a fun-filled day with Chuckles the Clown, children's activities, face painting, a coloring contest and games. Light refreshments will be served. The parade will start at 1 p.m.

Pricing: Free.

5. 

Where/When: Great Lakes Mall, 8:30 a.m., Nov. 12

Why Go: Oh, yes, it's that time of year again.

This event features free goodies, fun activities, coupons and giveaways. Radio Disney welcome Santa Claus to town as he arrives on a horse-drawn carriage in front of the food court at 8:30 a.m.

Santa will greet families and children as they enter the food court for a morning of fun. Guests can purchase breakfast at participating food court restaurants. Each child will receive a goody bag upon arrival (while supplies last.)

Immediately following the event, we will parade over to see the unveiling of the brand new Santa photo set
