Mentor Hosts Special Olympics Torch Run

The Ohio Special Olympics torch made its way through Mentor Tuesday morning as six athletes biked through the city in honor of the upcoming Summer Games.

Nearly 70 athletes and 30 volunteers from the Lake County Board of MRDD's Vocational Guidance Center will head to Columbus Friday to participate in the games. Tuesday's event honored the six cyclists who rode from Target on Route 20 to the VGC, where they were met by family, friends and supporters for a picnic and rally.

"We are so proud to live in Lake County because they are so supportive of the Special Olympics," said Susan Schein, whose daughter, Danielle, will participate in the cycling competition.

Danielle began playing sports a few years ago, inspired by her athletic siblings. In May, she became a gold qualifier for the Summer Games. She also enjoys bowling, golfing, softball and downhill skiing.

More than 2,000 officers escorted athletes during torch runs across the state Tuesday, including a few from Mentor.

"We love to help out," Mentor Sgt. Mike Majernik said. "It almost brings a tear to your eye to think about how strong these guys are."
