Mentor Commemorates the 10th Anniversary of 9/11

Churches and veterans groups will host memorials this Sunday

Mentor City Council passed a resolution Tuesday asking that everyone take a minute to remember those who passed away on Sept. 11, 2001.

At 1 p.m. this Sunday, Mentor churches will join those from across the country as they chime their bells as all are asked to offer a moment of silence.

The national Moment of Remembrance is just one of the ways that people will commemorate the tenth anniversary of Sept. 11. locally.

Bishop John L. Hopkins will give the message and all Mentor United Methodist clergy will participate in the service. Special music will be provided by the Mentor United Methodist choirs.

  • Lakeland Community College will have a special remembrance ceremony at noon by the clocktower flagpoles.
  •  will host a special memorial service at 4 p.m. Sunday for the almost 3,000 people who passed away that day.

Pastor Bill Daywalt will lead the service. Pastor Ed Hager of the  will speak also, as well as Mentor Fire Chief Richard Harvey and Mentor Police Chief Dan Llewellyn.

The Painesville Women’s Chorus and soloist Margaret Gertz will sing during the service and refreshments will be served afterward.

  • AMVETS Post 109 will host a special candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. Sunday at their post at 7847 Lake Shore Blvd. followed by an honor rifle guard.
