Memorial Day Parade Remembers Men and Women in Our Armed Forces

The solemn walking parade will start at Heinen's

To honor Mentor's military men and women, the city will hold a solemn walking parade that starts at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Heinen's, 8850 Mentor Ave.

The parade will include military groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Mentor High School band, said parade organizer and Recreation Superintendent Paul Hegreness.

It will head east on Mentor Avenue, then north on Hopkins Road to the Mentor Cemetery. A ceremony will start at 10 a.m. at the Vietnam Memorial where Mentor High and West Point Academy graduate Army Capt. Jose Rivera will speak.

Hegreness said there will be a presentation of wreathes, benediction and a gun salute followed by the playing of Taps. The presentation will last 35 minutes.

"It's no different than last year," Hegreness said. "We try to keep it a memorial, that's why we're having a walking parade versus something you might see on the Fourth of July. It works and that's why we are doing it."
