Learn About Mentor's Role in Civil War at Final Old Village Market Day

History buffs and beginners can learn about Mentor residents' roles in the Civil War, including that of a Congressional Medal of Honor winner

Did you know a Mentor man won the Congressional Medal of Honor during the Civil War?

Albert Clapp – he received it for his actions during the battle of Sayler's Creek in Virginia.

People can learn more about Clapp and other Mentor residents who served in the Union army at the final Old Village Market Day from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at

The market will also feature several vendors, selling locally grown produce, flowers, as well as arts, crafts and food.

The national park is the former home of President James A. Garfield, who is also a veteran of the Civil War. In fact, the rangers have created a diorama that depicts Garfield's first major conflict, the battle of Middle Creek, which will be in the visitor's center.

The Market Day is free to attend. Visitors can check out the market and tour the park's grounds, including Garfield's home, for free.

Also, the market will feature balloon artists, face painters and musicians for the children's entertainment.
