James A. Garfield Park to Host Old Village Market Days

For the next four Fridays, the national park and presidential home will host market days with different themes

The city of Mentor will hold its annual Old Village Market Days from 4 to 8 p.m. for the next four Fridays at

The farmer’s market features locally grown produce, arts and crafts, food, and many other products for sale by dozens of vendors.

Moreover, each night the Market Days will have a theme.

This Friday, it's Kids Night. There will be games and crafts especially for children, as well as a watermelon-eating contest. Also, Dave Henterly will have a special musical performance with his spoons and washboard at 6:30 p.m.

On Aug. 5, people can enjoy free samples from the many fine restaurants in the city during A Taste of Mentor.

On Aug. 12, the green thumbs will invade for a celebration of local gardens and landscaping during Garden Club Night.

Finally, on Aug. 19, visitors can learn more about Mentor and Ohio in the Civil War at Mentor and the Civil War Night. The event coincides with the park's celebration of the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Civil War.

The Market Days are all free to attend. Visitors can check out the market and tour the park's grounds, including President James Garfield's home, for free.

“The market is a reminder of President Garfield’s upbringing and interest in agriculture and it reminds us that this property and the entire region have a long farming tradition," said Sherda Williams, the park's superintendent. "We invite everyone to visit the market, enjoy local produce and products, and take in Garfield history.”
