James A. Garfield Park Hosting Civil War Program This Weekend

Program 'James A. Garfield's Military Life' celebrates 150th anniversary of Civil War and 180th anniversary of Garfield's birth

will host a program about the Civil War that should appeal to both dilettantes and history buffs at 2 p.m. this Saturday.

“James A. Garfield’s Military Life” will explore Garfield’s time as a Union officer during the Civil War and interpret how that service affected his later life and career.

Park rangers have held Civil War events all year at Garfield's Mentor home to recognize the 150th anniversary of the war, as well as the 180th anniversary of his birth.

“Both of these (anniversaries) give us wonderful opportunities to present important aspects of Garfield history to the public. We invite everyone to attend these special presentations," said Sherda Williams, the national park's superintendent.

"James A. Garfield's Military Life" is the second of four special programs dedicated to the Civil War anniversary.

The third, “James A. Garfield’s Family Life,” will take place on July 17. The last, “200 Days: The Presidency and Death of James A. Garfield,” will be September 24.

Both July 17 and September 24 are free days at the park. So, in addition to listening to the program, visitors can tour the grounds of the national park and Garfield's home for free.

Furthermore, on the third Saturday of each month, the park hosts a special Civil War-themed tour of the grounds.

The 90-minute tour emphasizes Garfield's time as a soldier, including his roles in the battles of Middle Creek and Chickamauga. The next one is scheduled for June 18.

The tour costs $15 per person. Reservations can be made by calling 440‐255‐8722.
