Free Tours, Events at James A. Garfield National Historic Site Today

Games, activities and tours are all free in honor of Presidents Day

  is offering a special deal in recognition of Presidents Day.

Visitors can tour the home where the president lived with his family for free Monday. Usually, it costs $5 for a guided tour.

Educational games, activities and prizes for children will also be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the theme for the day's events will be “Civil War Presidents” and programs will focus on those presidents who served as political or military leaders during the war.

Due to the overwhelming interest in previous events at James A. Garfield National Historic Site, the park has made arrangements with the city of Mentor for overflow parking.

They ask that only those with handicaps park at James A. Garfield National Historic Site. Everyone else is asked to park at nearby where a free shuttle will take visitors to the Historic Site and back.

James A. Garfield National Historic Site, called Lawnfield by visiting reporters, was also the site of Garfield's successful front-porch campaign. Instead of campaigning across the country, Garfield brought his constituents to him and talked to them about the issues of the day.

The house was completely restored by the National Park Service in the late 1990s, making it one of the most impressive presidential homes preserved for the public
