Deepwood Congratulates Special Olympians At Fall Fest

While not a Special Olympics sports, gourd bowling and cornhole will be the games du jour at 's . 

The festival celebrates the efforts of the local Special Olympians who competed in 15 different sports statewide. Those olympians .

Susan Schein -- one of the festival's organizers and mother to a Special Olympian -- said she hopes the people who come gain a new appreciation for the athletes.

"If we can get the public to be aware of them participating, then maybe they might want to help coach or just bring their family to cheer them on," she said.

Of course, the festival is also about having fun. Guests can play softball toss, a golf challenge, pumpkin toss, and ring around the pumpkin, as well as the aforementioned cornhole and gourd bowling.

Those who would prefer an artistic makeover to exerting themselves can get their faces painted, hair braided or colored, and nails painted.

Organizers have a bunch of prizes and medals to give away to those who come.

Also, the festival and all of its activities are free. The food is cheap: hot dogs and tacos for $1; coffee, cider or water for 50 cents; and a bag of kettle corn for $4.

Fall Fest is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday outside of the recreation site in the at 8121 Deepwood Blvd.
