EPA Grant To Improve Drainage At Great Lakes Mall

The city of Mentor and Great Lakes Mall hope a grant from the U.S. EPA will make it less wet in Mentor

A grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will provide $350,000 to improve the drainage in Mentor. The money will fund work designed to improve water quality within the Newell Creek watershed that flows into the Chagrin River and Lake Erie. The project will focus on the Great Lakes Mall's property. In the mall's parking lot, impervious surface areas will be replaced with pervious concrete next to 32 existing stormwater catch basins in the mall's parking lot. "This change alone will allow stormwater from 50 percent of the parking lot to infiltrate into the ground rather than enter the storm sewer system and prompt flooding," said U.S. Congressman Steven LaTourette in a statement. LaTourette noted that all the stormwater from the…

prj This is a wonderful example of local "green infrastructure" best practices. It will have positive "spillover effects." By decreasing stormwater runoff from the mall's parking lot, it will reduce flooding thereby improving drainage locally and improving water quality regionally that stems from the Newell Creek watershed. &nbsp more ›

LaTourette Retires & Man Takes One Drink Too Many: A Week In Review

Catch up on all the big news that happened this week in Mentor

1. It's the end of an era. After nine terms and 18 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Steve LaTourette (OH-14) has announced that he will not be running for re-election this November. His reason? It's not because he's jockeying for a better committee seat or feuding with House Speaker John Boehner. No, LaTourette said he's simply tired of the brinksmanship and infighting that prevents Congress from accomplishing its job. "For a long time now, words like compromise have been considered to be dirty words," he said during a news conference this week in Painesville. "And there are people on the right and the left who think that if you compromise, you're a coward. You're a facilitator. You're an appeaser. "I always believed that the …

"For a long time now, words like compromise have been considered to be dirty words," he said during a news conference today in Painesville. "I always believed that the art of being a legislator is finding common ground." Latourette added that he thinks the word "hate" has no place in politics. Because this rings so true... "Non-violence means dialogue, using our language, the human language. Dialogue means compromise; respecting each other’s rights; in the spirit of reconciliation there is a real solution to conflict and disagreement. There is no hundred percent winner, no hundred percent loser—not that way but half-and-half. That is the practical way, the only way. From none other … &nbsp more ›

Several media outlets are reporting that the nine-term U.S. representative has decided against running for re-election in November

According to several media outlets, U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette (OH-14) has decided against running for a 10th term in the U.S. House. Watch: LaTourette on SB 5 & ObamaCare

The congressman draws a conclusion from the public's rejection of both Senate Bill 5 and the Affordable Care Act

At face value, both Senate Bill 5 (which restricted unions' collective bargaining abilities) and the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obama care) have little in common. They would also seem to have diametrically opposed political supporters and detractors. However, the voters of Ohio rejected both by a sizable margin. Consequently, Congressman Steven LaTourette drew a conclusion from the Ohio electorate's actions while talking with members of the Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce Wednesday morning at Molinari's as part of the Chamber's Coffee & Conversation series. "I think the public is tired of having things jammed down their throats," he said. Other videos from LaTourette's talk:
