Photos: 2013 Mentor Restaurant Showcase

Check out some images from the city's tasty event, the Restaurant Showcase

The Mentor Restaurant Showcase returned Wednesday in a bigger and yummier fashion than last year's inaugural event. Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kevin Malecek worked with the city to secure a bigger space, the Mentor Civic Ice Arena, because he anticipated more guests. That turned out to be a good plan, as he estimated that about 200 people showed up. "It's going as well as we expected," he said during the event. "There's no excuse to leave here hungry." About 25 area restaurants participated, including:

This was a fun and relaxing event, and you certainly get your moneys worth of food, plus two drink tickets/person! My husband and I shared a little bit of everything so we could try it all (taking a break in between to let our stomachs settle). We didn't realize this event was held last year: someone sitting with us informed us of that. We would have attended last year if we'd known about it. We … &nbsp more ›

Melt Owner Matt Fish: Mentor a Fantastic Community

Fish announced a new restaurant and discussed entrepreneurship at a Mentor Area Chamber Commerce event

It's been nearly four months since Melt Bar & Grilled opened a Mentor location, but a trip there still reveals a packed house on most nights. That's clearly not a problem for owner Matt Fish, who opened his first location in Lakewood about seven years ago. "It's been a great experience out here — I know I don't have to tell you guys how fantastic your community is," Fish told the audience at the Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon this week. "This is a community I was eyeballing for many years with our growth." The Chamber invited Fish to the luncheon to discuss restaurant entrepreneurship and how to make it a success. He shared the stage with Joe Longo, who announced that his family would open a new restaurant in Mentor later this …

Superintendent Matt Miller also highlighted several high points from the last year for Mentor Schools

Mentor Schools Superintendent Matt Miller did not talk about many new issues when he gave his State of the Schools address Tuesday to the Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce. Instead, he used it as an opportunity to highlight the district's year. He noted that Mentor Schools received the grade "excellent with distinction" -- the highest possible ranking -- from the Ohio Department of Education. Mentor Public Schools students also exceeded the state standard for proficiency in all subjects at every grade level tested and exceeded the attendance and graduation rates required. The district also increased its performance index score for the fifth consecutive year, going to 104.5 from 103.8 last year However, Miller noted that the ODE will change …

New Owners of Fontina's Foods Thrilled to be Back in Business

After more than a decade away from business, the Verdi family took over Fontina's this month

Randy and Gerri Verdi's purchase of Fontina's Imported Foods is just two weeks old, but they already have plenty of familiarity with their new business. Fontina's is located where the couple opened Great Harvest Bread in the '90s. The Verdis sold that business in 2001 to focus on family and Randy's career as a financial analyst. Many of the memories and familiar faces from Great Harvest came back to Randy as he opened Fontina's under new ownership this month. "It's surreal," he said. "We're excited to be back in the business community. We've grown up business-wise in the Mentor community, and it's great to have a business back in here." Randy, a previous chairman of the Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce, says his family's newest venture is …

I stopped in today for the first time ever. Went in to pick up a loaf of fresh baked Italian bread. Please stop in just for the smell of it. It SMELLS like an Italian grocery/deli should. I also left with an Italian sub with great meats and cheeses. The sub was $3.99. What a great sandwich for a great price. Best wishes from a new customer. &nbsp more ›

BioLife Opens Mentor Site, Receives Loads of Praise

A family from Illinois traveled to Mentor to tout the plasma therapy provider's work at its grand opening ceremony

One of Mentor's newest businesses doesn't need to tout its employees as heroes. BioLife Plasma Services has families from all over the country taking care of that. As part of the plasma therapy provider's grand opening ceremony this week, a family from the Peoria, Ill. area told a crowd of city officials and Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce members about the kind of company they should expect with the arrival of BioLife. "Some of the people in this room saved my children's lives," Dana Fladhammer told the crowd. The Fladhammer family has three children who were each born with immunodeficiency. Despite years of struggle — 120 sick visits to the doctor in less than a year at one point — Fladhammer says the children each began piecing their …

Mueller, Eklund Talk About Overcoming Partisan Bickering

The candidates for Ohio senate even disagree on if the state has a problem with partisan bickering

The Lake County chambers of commerce, including the Mentor Area Chamber, hosted a forum for the region's state and national legislative candidates last week at LaMalfa Centre. Both candidates for the Ohio Senate's 18th district seat -- incumbent John Eklund (R-Munson Township) and Democrat Jim Mueller, a Russell Township trustee -- attended the forum. Eklund and Mueller were both asked how they would overcome partisan bickering in Columbus. Eklund replied by saying that the current state legislature actually accomplished quite a bit without political brinksmanship getting in the way. Meanwhile, Mueller said that facts have a way of overcoming partisanship. For more from Mueller and Eklund at the chamber forum, watch:
