Outdoor sporting goods store representatives teach patrons to bake a cake outdoors and answered questions about tailgating, campfire cooking and smoking
Baking a cake is probably the last thing a hungry camper thinks they can do outside. But patrons at the Mentor Public Library learned how last week, with help from representatives of an outdoor sporting goods store, as part of a series for camping, hunting and fishing enthusiasts. Gander Mountain sent outdoor cooking experts to the library May 16 to teach a seminar on outdoor cooking. While the "chocolate-cherry dump cake" baked, the representatives answered questions about tailgating, smoking and campfire cooking. Paws to Read program pairs reticent readers with therapy dogs
The Paws to Read program at Mentor Public Library pairs trained therapy dogs with children who are hesitant to read. The dogs help relax the children so they can get used to reading to an audience. The library hosts the program monthly and it often fills up quickly, so contact the children's department at Mentor Public Library if you think your child could benefit from Paws to Read. Lowe's and Mentor Public Library have teamed for a series of do-it-yourself seminars
The Lowe's at the Library seminar series continued Wednesday at the Mentor Public Library main branch with a hands-on lesson on how to make patios and walkways using stones or pavers. The next seminar in the series will be held June 12 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Main Library. Do-it-yourselfers will have the opportunity to learn how to install a drip irrigation system. Throughout the rest of the the year, Lowe's experts will teach people how to build koi ponds, decks and much more. All the seminars in the Lowe's series are free to attend and open to the public. This Wednesday's lunch-time talk focuses on the role the draft played in the American Civil War
James A. Garfield National Historic Site and Mentor Public Library are continuing their lunchtime talks this Wednesday at noon at the library's main branch. This week, Park Guide Joan Kapsch will talk about the role the draft played in both the north and south. The Union and Confederacy both used conscription to grow their military forces during the Civil War. Kapsch will discuss how effective draftees were as soldiers and will also examine such famous incidents as the 1863 New York City draft riots. This Wednesday's talk focuses on the first and only president of the Confederacy
James A. Garfield National Historic Site and Mentor Public Library are continuing their lunchtime talks this Wednesday at noon. This month, Park Ranger Allison Powell will speak about the life, career, and legacy of Jefferson Davis, the first and only President of the Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis attended West Point, fought in the Mexican-American War, and served both in Congress and as U.S. Secretary of War at one point.
