Listen: Favorite Songs from the Police Chiefs of Patch

We asked the police chiefs in our Patches their favorite song, and made a Spotify playlist.

We're going to mix it up with our Spotify playlist this week. Instead of telling you what we're listening to, we're asking prominent people in the community what they're rockin'. This week we asked the police chief in each of our Patches their favorite song. To listen, you have to be a Spotify user, but don't worry, signing up is free! Who should we ask next week? Here's the song each police chief chose (WARNING: SOME SONGS NOT APPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN): "Star Spangled Banner," U.S. Coast Guard version: Fairlawn Chief Kenneth Walsh "Katmandu," Bob Seger: Lakewood Chief Timothy Malley "I Fought the Law," Bobby Fuller Four: Westlake Chief Richard Walling AND Avon Lake Chief David Owad "Hurricane," Bob Dylan: Mayfield Heights Detective Joe …

Star Wars Day: May the Fourth Be With You

Share your memories and love of "Star Wars"

Happy Star Wars Day! Why is today Star Wars Day? Because of some delightful wordplay: "May the Fourth be with you." Star Wars has embedded itself in our common culture the way few movies do. Even people who aren't big fans of the movies know the Imperial March music means something wicked this way comes. Big cinnamon rolls can make one think of Princess Leia.  Share your memories of that galaxy far, far away. Did you (or your parents) wait in line for hours to see the original? Did you and your friends turn broom handles or sticks into lightsabers and have your own epic battles? Or maybe it was using your bikes for landspeeder races. When you say, "I love you," does your spouse say, "I know?" If you've ever used Yoda-talk with someone, …

Girl Scouts Earn Art Badges At Mentor Public Library

The girls made their CD cover art and collages

Girl Scouts from local troops earned their art patch during the Calling All Girl Scout Artists program at Mentor Public Library. Guest speaker Kelly Finley, a teacher Lake Catholic High School, taught the scouts about the elements of design used in a drawing, the relationship between primary and secondary colors and common materials used to create paintings, drawings and other visual art. As part of the program, the girls made their own CD cover art and a collage representing their self-portrait or the portrait of another person, which they were able to take home with them. Kristen Halick, a Girl Scout Cadet of Mentor Troop 1486, said she loves art and thought the Calling All Girl Scout Artist program was fun. "I liked the CD cover …

Great Lakes Mall To Host 'Expressions of Recovery' Art Show

Artists in the show have serious brain disorders -- like bipolar disorder or clinical depression -- or an addiction

Great Lakes Mall will host a special art show this May in the Dillard's south concourse. Most of the artwork was made during art therapy groups and all of the artists have a serious brain disorder -- schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or clinical depression, for instance – or have struggled with addiction. The show is called Expressions of Recovery and it is in its 21st year. The Lake County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board sponsors it. Heidi Sliter is an art therapist with Crossroads, an agency in the ADAMHS network that focuses on children, adolescents and families.
