Mentor voters chose to pass the city's 2-percent income tax for the next five years.

Unofficial results show that voters passed it by a margin of 6,915 to 2,748.

The money generated from the tax represents 60 percent to 70 percent of the city’s annual operating budget.

It pays for police and fire protection, emergency medical services, road and bridge maintenance, snow and ice control, building safety inspections, rental home inspections and other public services.

"We're glad it passed," City Council President Scott Marn said. "We're extremely thrilled that we have the backing of the citizens of Mentor. This passage will allow us to continue to provide the best services we can."
