More than 650 people from 42 organizations volunteered to help with 66 projects across the county as part of the United Way of Lake County's 19th annual Day of Caring.

Several of those projects were in Mentor and many would not have been completed without the volunteers' help.

Nonprofits like James A. Garfield National Historic Site, Mentor Public Library, Lake Humane Society and Deepwood received a hand trimming hedges, staining benches, painting walls and so much more.

"The volunteers have been very proactive and were coming to us for projects months in advance, before we were going to them," United Way of Lake County spokesman Nick Carrabine said. "It shows people in the community truly care and, in just one day, they improved the lives of hundreds of people in need."
