Tom Strobel Verbally Commits to University of Michigan

Mentor High School standout defensive end chooses Michigan over more than 40 other colleges and universities

More than 40 colleges and universities pursued defensive end Tom Strobel, including more than half of the Big Ten.

However, Strobel ultimately decided to attend and play for the University of Michigan.

“I have been very blessed with the opportunity to visit and meet with many elite colleges,” Strobel said in a statement on the Mentor Schools web site. “But I genuinely feel that Michigan will provide me with both the best academic and athletic college experience possible.”

Strobel had previously listed Michigan, Ohio State University, Stanford, Michigan State and Nebraska as his front runners. Per NCAA rules, he cannot officially sign with the Wolverines until February.

The 6-foot-6 Strobel also plays for the high school's basketball team and maintains a 3.8 grade point average. He intends to major in business or finance.

Strobel is listed with a four-star rating from both Scout.com and Rivals.com and has a three-star rating from ESPN.

Strobel is also the first player in Mentor High School history to be, an honor reserved for the best 400 high school football players in the country.
