Both the Mentor High Cardinals and Lake Catholic Cougars are looking to follow up their impressive 2011 seasons.

Mentor High QB and North Carolina commit Mitch Trubisky will return with wide receivers Brandon Fritts, Connor Krizancic and Jeff Foreman and recreate the high-powered offense that broke several school records and went 11-2 before falling in the regional final.

Meanwhile, AP Coach of the Year Mike Bell will look to top a Cougars campaign that lasted into the postseason despite needing to replace 21 starters.

This football season will feature several marquee matchups for both football teams.

In a rematch of one of the region's biggest regular-season high-school football games, Mentor will visit St. Ignatius on Sept. 8. (Though Mentor won the regular-season, St. Ignatius knocked Mentor out of the playoffs.)

Mentor will also have an opportunity for revenge against Twinsburg, who handed Mentor their only regular season loss, on Oct. 26.

Similarly, Lake Catholic has several can't-miss games scheduled.

The Cougars will square off with high school powerhouses Youngstown Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney on Sept. 7 and 21, respectively. (Both teams will be hoping for revenge after Lake Catholic beat them last year.)

They will also meet with their rivals Walsh Jesuit on Oct. 19.

These schedules only list varsity games. All games begin at 7 p.m. Home games for both Mentor and Lake Catholic are played at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium.
