See How Area Athletes Did At States This Weekend
Athletes from Mentor High and Lake Catholic were all over the podium this weekend
Athletes from Mentor High and Lake Catholic made the region proud this weekend as thet excelled in sports as diverse as wrestling, bowling and gymnastics.
- Four Lake Catholic wrestlers competed at states this weekend in Columbus and all four placed.
Sophomore Anthony Tutolo lead the charge. He was second in his weight class (113,) his only loss was to Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy wrestler Nathan Tomasello in the state finals.
Teammate Jimmy Szep (195) placed third and Sean Fee (126) and Brad Taton (106) were sixth and eighth, respectively, in their classes.

- Mentor gymnast Kayla Kosmerl won the all-around at states, making her the best individual high school gymnast in Ohio. This is the first time a Cardinal has earned that distinction.
The rest of Kosmerl's team also performed well on the way to a second-place finish. They only trailed the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Bees, the same powerhouse that beat them at districts.
The highest the Mentor gymnastics team had ever scored at states before this weekend was fourth, which happened last year.
- Mentor bowler Kevin Oravecz bowled a 699 in the individual competition -- the second best in the state. He only trailed the overall champion by three pins.
His teammates Brandon Poplstein, Ryan Parr and Cameron Sullivan all placed in the top 50 for the state, as well.
- All four of the city's high school basketball teams -- boys and girls from Mentor and Lake Catholic -- won their playoff games this weekend.
Both the Mentor and Lake Catholic girls basketball teams won their district finals Saturday and will advance to the regional tournament.
Mentor leaned on the hot hands of Lauren Stefancin who scored 28 points while hitting a school record eight 3-pointers in their 61-49 win over Glenville. Meanwhile, Lake Catholic topped Geneva 56-36.
On Friday, the Lake Catholic boys dominated Ashtabula Edgewood 112-65 and Mentor topped Stow 102-88.
Mentor's next game will be 7 p.m. Tuesday against East Tech, which beat Mayfield Friday, in Euclid.
The Cougars' next opponent is University School, whom they will play 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Ashtabula.
