Mentor Planning Commission unanimously voted to support the vacating of the Lake Overlook Drive extension after residents said it would help stop trespassing and vandalism in that area.

Most of the people who live along the extension, led by John Habe, attended the Commission meeting Thursday night at City Hall.

Habe said the neighborhood has been victimized by people who cut through their yards and party on their private beach property.

"The street itself is a magnet for break-ins, vandalism, trespassing, alcohol, drugs, drug deals and debris," Habe told the Planning Commission. "Fifteen police reports have been filed concerning the most malicious of these incidents."

Habe said if the city vacated the road, it would deter trespassers.

"People respect private driveways," he said.

Planning Commission approved the request. However, the decision ultimately falls to the City Council.

Council needs to approve the vacation with a majority vote before it becomes official.
