Mitch Trubisky throws 4 TDs To Lead Mentor Over Medina

Cardinals defense, offense get in gear to keep team undefeated

Perhaps the most pressure faced Friday evening against Medina was the inevitable letdown as a seemingly much easier contest loomed against the Bees .

The Bees undoubtedly wished that pressure would help them, but Cardinals quarterback Mitch Trubisky dashed their hopes with four touchdown passes and rose his season total to 25 passing TDs as the host Cardinals manhandled the Bees, 45-7, on Friday night.

Mentor improved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the Northeast Ohio Conference, while Medina dropped to 3-5 and 1-2 in the NOC.

“We played real well defensively. We shut them down pretty good. I think it was 552 yards to 190,” Mentor head football coach Steve Trivisonno said. “It was a good overall performance, and that’s what I wanted, to see us come out and play hard. And that’s what we did.”

Mentor is ranked second in the Associated Press’ Division I state poll, trailing only Cincinnati Moeller, and is first in the Division I Region 1 playoff computer rankings.

And if that’s not enough, they are ranked first by the Plain Dealer after breaking Solon's 20-game regular-season home win streak with a 44-20 win last week. Trivisonno made sure his team didn’t take Medina lightly.

“You’re always concerned about that,” Trivisonno said of having a letdown. “That’s something our kids have to learn how to do. They’ve got to learn to come to play every week and play hard. And I was pleased with what we did from that standpoint tonight.”

Last week, Medina overcame Strongsville in a 30-27 three-overtime victory, but no such drama awaited them at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium on Friday evening.

Trubisky hit Brandon Fritts for a 43-yard TD pass and followed with a 5-yarder to Cameron Kavan to put Mentor up, 14-0, in the first quarter.

After Kavan and Warren Ashton ran in a pair of 1-yard TD scores, Trubisky found Kavan again for a 6-yard TD pass for a commanding 35-0 lead to close the first half’s scoring.

Fritts snared his second TD from Trubisky from 31 yards away for a 42-0 lead, and Tomislav Derezic, who didn’t miss an extra-point conversion in the game, tacked on a 37-yard field goal to close Mentor’s scoring in the third quarter.

Mason Schreck finally got the Bees on the scoreboard with a 28-yard run in the third.

Mentor wide receiver Connor Krizancic, who suffered a mild concussion against Solon, returned in limited action on Friday night.

Mentor begins its two-week road trip to end the regular season and faces Strongsville on Friday and Twinsburg on Oct. 28. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
