Mentor Girls Basketball Team Tops Willoughby South

The Cardinals outhustled Willoughby in 44-31 win; next up, Glenville this Saturday

The girls basketball team trailed for most of the first half during their 44-31 win against Willoughby South.

However, the game's momentum shifted on a specific possession four minutes and forty seconds into the third quarter.

The Cardinals shot four times, missed four times and nabbed the offensive rebound all four times. Then, junior Guard Lauren Stefancin sank a 3-pointer from the corner to give Mentor a 25-22 lead.

The score was soon followed by another Stefancin three and touched off an 8-0 run that lasted for the remainder of the third quarter.

Not only did the possession permanently put the momentum behind the Cardinals, but it was emblematic of Mentor's entire game. While they didn't shoot particularly well, they hustled hard, grabbed rebounds and played defense. In the end, that was enough.

Sophomore Center Christine Dawson lead an outstanding defensive effort for Mentor. She blocked six shots, in addition to scoring eight points.

Sophomore Katelyn Zdanowicz lead all Mentor scorers with nine points.

The Cardinals will face Glenville, who beat Eastlake, 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Perry High School.
