Mentor Fire Department Holding Debrillator Scavenger Hunt
Winner will get a ride in the fire truck
One lucky person can win a ride on a Mentor Fire truck -- and who doesn't want to ride the truck? -- by playing in the department's defibrillator scavenger hunt.
Automated External Defibrillator (AEDs, for short) are placed throughout the city. They are used to provide a shock to the heart when someone is having a heart attack.
AEDs play a critical role in a heart attack victim's survival. For every minute that passes without the use of an AED, a victim’s chance of survival drops by 7 to 10 percent. But they are only useful if someone notices them.
Consequently, the Mentor Fire Department has created a contest to make people more aware of the AEDs around them.
Here's how to compete in the scavenger hunt:
- Make a list of the addresses and general locations of any AEDs that you see while out and about in Mentor.
- Then submit your list to Mentor Fire Department, AED Scavenger Hunt, 8467 Civic Center Blvd., Mentor, OH 44060. (You can also drop off your list in person or email it to fire@cityofmentor.com.)
The person who finds and lists the locations of the most AEDs in Mentor will win a ride in a fire truck.
The deadline to enter is January 1.

I will have to google what an AED looks like so I know what to look for. Sounds like fun! Do we get to sound the sirens? Haha!

Oh yes, the winner can sound the sirens. It wouldn't be a fire truck ride without being able to listen to those loud sirens at some point.

I hope so. What's the point of riding in the truck if you don't get to sound the sirens?

As a local paramedic (not Mentor FYI), I ask that you please don't refer to Cardiac Arrest as a "Heart Attack". AEDs are for Cardiac Arrest. Sudden Cardiac Arrest can be caused by many, many things. Many people are confused about what a true "heart attack" is because they associate it the image of cardiac arrest/sudden death/the use of AEDs. This causes many people to deny that they are having a heart attack, which presents often as simple chest pain which is a result of the death of heart muscle due to a blocked artery. This denial leads to the death of many people, since untreated heart attacks may progress to cardiac arrest. I don't want to be arrogant, I just want to spread the proper facts. Failure to recognize *actual* heart attacks (as opposed to "heart attacks" as mentioned here) is a true problem that kills people. Everyone please take time to recognize the real symptoms of a heart attack. Check out American Heart Association's site. Thanks.

Time is running out to win a ride on a fire truck. The Mentor Fire Departments AED Scavenger Hunt deadline is January 1, 2012. So if you or someone you know would enjoy a ride on the fire truck, submit the address and location of all the AEDs that you can find in Mentor.
Several Automated External Defibrillators (AED) were revealed in the “Around Town” segment that aired November 21, 2011. You can view this segment at http://cityofmentor.com/live/the-mentor-channel/video-on-demand/
So keep looking for those AEDs, but make sure to get your list submitted so you will be entered to win the fire truck ride.
