Man Accused Of Making Meth In Walmart

James Richardson is suspected of stealing the ingredients to make methamphetamine and then using them in the store

MENTOR, OH -- A man is accused of not just stealing the ingredients to make methamphetamine from a Walmart in Mentor, but also trying to make the meth in the store.

A security guard spotted James Richardson, 37, of Perry, walking around the store about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

He put drain cleaner, camp fuel and Lime Out stain remover in his shopping cart, all of which are used in the production of meth, Mentor Police Lt. Ken Zbiegien said.

Then Richardson grabbed a salt shaker and poured some of each of the products he had taken into it. Then he began shaking it, Zbiegien said.

Authorities call this the shake-and-bake or one-pot method, which involves combining the ingredients in a single sealed container and shaking it to increase the pressure.

Richardson shook the shaker for awhile and then left it on a store shelf, Zbiegien said.

Then he began to walk toward the exit with his chemicals; but, by this point, police had been called and officers stopped him.

When police and Lake County Narcotics agents looked into the shaker, it still had the meth in it, Zbiegien said.

Mentor firefighters cordoned portions of the store because Richardson had spilled some of his chemicals while making the meth, Zbiegien said.

Richardson initially told police that he needed the products for use at home. Zbiegien added that Richardson was also jittery while talking to officers.

Richardson has gotten in trouble for both drugs and specifically meth before.

He has five previous convictions for felony drug possession and one more for manufacturing meth, Zbiegien said.

Police charged Richardson with two counts of illegal assembly of manufacturing meth and a count of theft.

He was arraigned Monday morning in Mentor Municipal Court. Judge John Trebets set his bond at $75,000, which was not posted.

Richardson's next court hearing is set for June 25.

Why is this 'person' even walking the streets? He should be locked up from all of the previous convictions. Now his addiction is so bad - he's doing stuff like this right out in public, that can be DANGEROUS to innocent people. Let's all hope that this time - he will serve enough time to get clean (over a year) and possibly live a productive life. I pray the judge does not just let this guy walk again!

If intelligent people, right or left or upside-down, got their way, being a drug addict would not be a crime (stealing from Walmart is) and instead of spending 50,000 dollars a year for five years to put him through crime school (prison), we would spend
what was necessary to give him the help he needs.

Rarely do meth heads ever come clean & stay that way. Even if he does hard time in prison (where he can get this drug as well), when he comes out he will go back to the same thing again.

To be fair, there's more to making meth than what is in this story. Additionally, anyone with an Internet connection is only a couple of Google searches away from learning how to make meth.

They didn't tell the how to, just some of the common ingredients found in the making of some types. If you just mix those products together, you will be playing with a chemical fire, and not making anything you would want to put in your mouth or body. An intelligent chemist would be able to discern what ingredients are missing, and more to the point the precise mixture. get any of this wrong and you kill yourself...Or maybe this is their intent...

Better yet, lock him and everyone who wants to do these drugs up in a facility, where they can do all of this trash all day long. But keep them there until they can come clean. Odds are none will ever check out of such a facility, due to their uncontrollable desire for their drugs...But at least the crime rate will go down, and no one will be "cooking Meth" in Walmart again.

For Linda, These persons try these drugs, mostly on a whim, then decide that the drugs make them feel real good. They like the "high" so much, that they will sell anything they have for their next fix. Nothing matters anymore, just their next fix. It's a chemical addition, one that few can ever overcome. Many who try, end up committing suicide to end their cravings. And this goes for Heroin, Cocaine and others, as well as alcohol. You never get the "monkey" off of your back.

putting hard core drug addicts in jail is a waste of jail space. Jails should be for criminals. What is the difference between an addict and an alcoholic? We need to open or convert some jails to prison rehabs...with the focus on rehab of the person and then job training and parenting classes and lifeskill classes. We are wasteing humans with addiction issues,,,they really aren't criminals....the drugs turn them into that. We won't fix the problem til we fix the person and jail just won't do that....rehab will...plus we can maybe get i out of the greedy private sector....I mean only the rich have a chance...40K to 50K please......sorry for this kid he st need rehab not jail.....

He shuttled the fumes out of his apartment (god forbid he be caught!)and into our apartment making everything we ate drank or breathed be covered with the toxic residue. I am burned so badly from it that I have to shave off my hair and now need a double bypass (which I cannot have because they would have to take the repair tissue from my legs which are contaminated down to the muscle!). The police used him as a snitch and the landlord protected him too. Perhaps if you are so concerned about HIM - YOU should have lived next door to him and have to sit all nght in a recliner to try to breathe. I think they should shoot the idiots and put them - and the people (kids, older people) that are unknowingly sickened - out of their misery!

Put him in a prison, he'll get the drugs in there too. He has to commit crimes to get his fix, so he is a criminal. What part of the equation don't you understand ?
I have had many friends who were addicted to drugs, and they all ended up doing themselves and all of their friends a favor, when they committed suicide. Some left notes saying they were sorry for all of the trouble they had caused. Others just said good-bye. Rehab only works for the ones who really want to quit, and many of those fail as well. One has to really understand the physical and psychological draw or addiction these drugs cause a person. The majority never can escape from these drugs, except in death.

As I've said before, give these fools a place to live, a narrow prison type cell, where they can do all the drugs they want all day & night with out cost to them. But keep them locked up in there until they can come clean themselves, should they want to (and they never will). This would get them off of the streets, shut down most if not all of the street crimes, make the neighborhoods safer, and reduce the need for so many police. The only price would be for those who have to give out the drugs and what little food these persons would need (and of course the drugs). Only problem I can see is that the conservatives won't want to pay for this, and the liberals will cry that it is an unconstitutional form of imprisonment.

It's amazing how so many hear want to lock people away for life over an addiction. Trust me folks, meth is the *ultimate* addiction. Locking drug users up for a few months or years while putting a felony on their permanent record ensures they won't have a future or be able to get a job when they get out. Guess what happens when you don't treat an addict? They go right back to it! You guys keep screaming for harsher crimes, but at some point you have to ask why over 1% of the US population is in jail in what is increasingly becoming a FOR PROFIT system.

I agree with you commonsense...but, you have to look at it too from a legal aspect. When you commit the crime, you do the time. Most counties will put a drug addict in jail and give them opportunity to go to rehab when they are done paying their time. The crime just so happens to be drugs, it could have been stealing, rape, etc...would you suggest rehab for that too..? The law is in place for a reason, perhaps we dont have a perfect justice system, but, we are still the best country in the world to live

OK, Pam, you do raise an interesting point. Will an article like this enable copycat criminals? I acknowledge that it's possible. However, the drug addicts who want to make and use meth, by and large, already know everything in this story and more. The one-pot method is not a clandestine secret. It's already a fairly common practice among those who make and use this drug.

(However, I think it's an erroneous and sensationalistic argument to suggest a child would imitate this man. I do not believe a child will read the story -- which is about a man whose life has ostensibly been destroyed by drugs -- and think, "Good, now I know how to make meth." And if a child does think that, then they have been failed by more people than me.)

I mean really, what is the problem with swearing (again not something I am interested in) but what, are they afraid kids might see it? Really? The priorities here are so out of whack it is like an alternative reality!

Is this the launch of forcing people to consider drug use as main stream acceptable? Sorry, I have seen way too many Grannies who have had all their personal belongings "disappear" or worse, when her grandson the "very nice boy" comes to visit, to allow myself to be party to this warped thinking. Drug addicts (especially harder drugs) will rob you blind, even if they love you. This does not even begin to address what they do to their own children. Contrary to the pop-culture claims, drug use is NOT a victimless crime!

The Ministry of Justice states it cost the tax payers around 60 thousand a year to keep in someone in prison. With access to cable, educational opportunities, exercise equipment and 3 meals a day. Most of these folks live better in prison than they ever would outside. The system is really a joke and if 60 thousand per person was spent on rehabilitation i wonder if the success rate would improve.

Well I just want to say alittle something about the things people have been saying. I myself WAS and I will say WAS again a crack addicted person. I was raped many times by a person in my extended family. I never told anyone until I was about 40. You guys will never understand what and how things like that will make you feel. You just want to forget and the drug will make you forget for a little while. I was so tired of useing. I finally told a theripest (sorry for the spelling I have never been a good speller) and she got me on the RIGHT drug, butt I was still addicted to crack. I prayed and prayed to GOD to please help me recover. When God decided that I couldnt do it myself he helped me. I was a (CRACK HEAD) for 9 long years. I have been clean for just about 4 years and I thank God that I was helped. I often think back and wander wow that could have been me. So what Im tryiing to say is that just because someone is addicted some kind of drug dosnt mean that he/she is a bad po the woman that was hurt by the dealer please try and forgive and your life will get much better for you. I used to have that much anger towards the person that did me wrong for years. No I didnt come out of the situation the same person but if you set back and think about it I bet you are alot stronger person than you were and Im sorry you were hurt. I have to believe that im a stronger person than I was. So with that I hope and pray that you will get the help you need.

Good for you WB. Nice job getting clean. You should be very proud of yourself. Always remember that is probably the hardest thing you will ever face in your life. Now, the sky is the limit, you can do almost anything. Again, good job, Salute'

You don't need to use profanity to get a point across. When you express your opinion by using swear words then your point ends up looking childish, immature, and uneducated. Much is the same as when in an arguement with someone....screaming and yelling is counterproductive. I get it, we are all (at least should be) adults here. But that doesn't mean anything. Adults can, and should, have adult debates without swearing.

Whatever happened to free will and morality? Parents being parents and teaching their kids how to be contributing members of society? I, not being a meth user, would have wondered what ingredients he would have needed from Walmart to make the stuff. It is not a recipe. The items were provided to help the reader understand the story. Just because they were listed does not make me want to go to Wally world and get an afternoon high. I was taught by my parents how to function in this world in a positive way. What the problem now is, too many parents want the school systems to raise their kids without providing character education at home.
