A Mentor man is accused of fighting with police and damaging one of their cars when they tried to arrest him for disorderly conduct early Saturday morning.

Mentor Police Department received a call that someone was shouting racial slurs and hugging a phone pole at about 2 a.m. near the intersection of Munson Road and Hyde Street, Lt. Tim Allen said.

When police went to the intersection, they found 21-year-old Adam Swider sitting on a tree lawn with an open bottle of rum, Allen said.

Police wrote in their report that Swider was drunk.

When officers tried to arrest Swider, he would not cooperate. He kicked a Mentor police officer and tried to kick a Mentor-on-the-Lake patrolman that had come to help, Allen said.

When officers got Swider in the back of a police car, he continue to fight back. He kicked the cruiser's door repeatedly, damaging its window frame, until officers stunned him with a Taser, Allen said.

"He was warned several time that he would be Tased and he kept doing it," Allen said.

Police said they also found about 80 pills of prescription opiates on Swider that he did not have a prescription for.

Swider was charged with assaulting a police officer, vandalism, drug possession, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and having an open container.

Mentor Municipal Court Judge John Trebets arraigned Swider this morning. He set Swider's bond at $63,000, which Swider did not pay.

Swider's next court appearance is scheduled for April 11.
