There are some opportunities for fun and philanthropy this weekend
1. BRANDON SHIMA'S PROM-ISE
Where/When: Memorial Middle School, 7 p.m. Thursday (March 1)
Why Go: Join us for an evening for gorgeous prom gowns, tuxedos and fun.
Brandon's PROMise is an annual prom show to celebrate an honor the life of Brandon Shima, a Mentor High student who lost his life too early. All proceeds to benefit the Brandon A. Shima Anti-Bullying Foundation.
The Mentor High cheerleaders, dance team and American Commodore Dancers will be performing. All models are students at Mentor High.
Pricing: $10 or $5 if you're wearing a Shima "Stay Connected" T-shirt
2. SEUSS-A-THON
Where/When: Mentor Public Library's main branch, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday
Why Go: Celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday by building a truffula tree, playing pin-the-mustache-on-the-Lorax, eating birthday cake and reading some Seuss-pendous books.

3. UNITED WAY OF LAKE COUNTY'S SUPER RAFFLE
Where/When: Great Lakes Mall, 5:30 p.m. Friday
Why Go: See if you're a big winner during the United Way of Lake County Super Raffle drawing at the Mentor mall. If you're there and win, you can pick your own prize.
The local chapter of the United Way is also kicking off its annual Feed Lake County drive at the mall Friday.

4. WINTER HIKE AT MENTOR MARSH
Where/When: Mentor Marsh Nature Preserve, 2 p.m. Sunday
Why Go: Look for signs of wildlife such as tracks and nests that show the animals that use the preserve as a vital habitat over the winter. Identification guides will be available.

5. FISH FRY
Where/When: Knights of Columbus #947 headquarters at 987 Mentor Ave, Painesville, 4 p.m. Friday
Why Go: Lenten season means fish on Fridays. Enjoy Lake Erie perch, cole slaw, fries and more.
